New theme!

Leave it to animators to pick the most bad-ass, gruesome and dark option during the happiest month of the year. This months theme is "Gangsters", interpret it how you like, any era, tons of options- just please no Jolly Old St.Nick Gangsters...
Morbidly Obese animals was an awesome theme, great job to everyone who participated. I can't wait to see what people come up with this month. Happy Holidays!

This is all I need to lose weight!

In my mind being morbidly obese is way more than just being "round". So I farted out this lovely specimen.
I don't know what it is, I think its either a greyhound or a mouse... you decide. Either way, I've been visiting peopleofwalmart.com a lot these days and using the creatures on the site as my inspiration for this piece.
Enjoy!!!!

What's the secret to weight loss that the big corporations don't want you to know?
its not powders and gym memberships, just PUT DOWN THE FORK!!! FACE!!!
...thank you family guy....

Hugo!

Hey! I'm kinda killing two birds with one stone here! This is a design I did yesterday for this months 11 second club- which also fits this months theme quite well:) Also it's extremely difficult to design a fat appealing caterpillar that doesn't look like the "Bugs Life" design, hopefully he looks different enough! I would love some feedback as I can incorporate it into my keys next week. Thanks!

New November Theme!

If animals were allowed in McDonalds...we'd have better reference! Great October month, tons of great drawings and imagitive pieces! This month I decided to only choose themes that were a little "outside the box", to change things up abit; I believe this was Phil Lanoix's suggestion! Have fun! I can't wait to see what people come up with! Feel free to leave suggestions about the blog, or just life in general!

Happy Halloween!

Hey everyone! I stumbled across the blog recently and Trent's been nice enough to allow me to join the group and play :) I started the month with the plan of doing a drawing for M - F for all of October. If you're wondering why they have the date somewhere in them, that's why (except for the witches at the bottom, I didn't put a date on that one). So there we have it! Above are a couple of October's Halloween drawrings.

Happy happy Halloween! Until next time, sketchy folks...

October Theme!

Hey Guys/Gals
Awesome looking month...I love seeing the variety of stuff! As you know, the next theme is Halloween...should be fun (Great suggestion Cara!)
As you can see I put up some guidlines on the side. I was getting quite a few emails and comments about people posting more then once..or old work...or too many people in the blog(which is great, email suggestions are really appreciated, helps me to know what some people are thinking). Personally I like seeing alot of artwork, but this will help keep things constructed in the blog. When it comes down to it, you just gotta remember that this blog is for personal use, your looking for motivation to improve your own drawings...and seeing other works should be inspiration. The people that are using this for improving their own work, and using the themes to direct it, are improving tremendously. I am happy to see people sticking with it, and having fun doing it!
Thanks for making this blog kick ass!
suggestions are always helpful, let me kno what u think!
Thanks

Jungle Temple

So here's my offering for this month. I always wanted to try matte painting so I decided this would be a good time to go for it. I made this by taking various photos, cutting out bits and pieces and sticking them together, doing lots of colour correction and lighting adjustment, and then painting in several more bits by hand to bring it all together.

I'm not completely happy with how it turned out, some of the photos don't quite fit together still, and some of them were pretty low quality and blurry. Might go over this some more some other time.

Here is a mix of the photos I used to start with.

Jungle Bop.

So it's my first post, and it's a pretty simple sketch, but enjoy!
I started to research natives and jungles around the world and I quickly began to realize that I was drawn towards Ecuadorian and Amazonian natives. So I came up with my own style of natives; let's call them Amadorians! As for the animals, I discovered pygmy jerboa's this summer, so I drew mutant size versions of them as the native's pets.

I never introduced myself on my first post; so my name is Justin and I really enjoy perusing this blog. There's lot's of great art and I can't wait to see what people produce next!

Spetember

Hey everyone!
Another cool month here, lots of great designs and pictures! Definately a somewhat narrow theme, things started to look the same after a while...but "The Jungle" sounds like a great theme, there's so many different animals, tribes and wildlife that we could draw! I can actually see peoples styles improving from the first month, which is the only goal of this blog, to learn off fellow artists, so I hope people are having fun! I'm bringing my buddy Collin on board to help Admin the blog, so hopefully we can spice it up a little. Let me know what you think, any suggestions on ways to improve the blog would be awesome, thanks and have a good month!
Sorry about the delay with the header and stuff....I'm looking for something different, maybe a slide show???

Hello, Sailor!

A need for more Swag!

Here are some late pirate entries, I was doodling at work and was planing on just posting the sketches, but one thing lead to another and time makes fools of us all.

I was watching the movie "Porco Rosso" and loving the Air Pirates, and decided to make some land pirates in the same vain as the pirates in the movie, but in the era of the "Cold War".

Hope you like them, see you soon!

A bunch of pirates

I just bought a quill recently, and Im hooked. And here are some pirates.

Pirate Ship

So a little while ago my computer died...I took it in for repairs where they promptly broke it some more and sent it back. When I brought it back again they refused to believe that there was anything wrong with it, citing the "impossibility" of it. I can't say I quite understand this repair philosophy. Did they theorize that by breaking it further, the two broken elements would somehow cancel each other out? Perhaps they hoped to delve so deep into the realm of broken-ness that they came out the other side into some mythic world where it was not only repaired, but nigh invincible. After a long argument they agreed to take it back and try again, where I suspect they'll simply shove it in a corner for three weeks and then tell me it's repaired itself.

The point is that all of this has forced me to resort to purely traditional methods. This is watercolours, my first serious attempt at non-digital painting. I've decided that mixing colours manually is a pain in the ass, and that real life should come with an undo button.

August Theme!

Hey everybody
Great month yet again, fantastic artwork and tons of different mediums. So the new theme is "Pirates", narrowly beating out "Animals with Power tools"...(cough)thank god. Again, I am trying to keep monthly archives of everything, so please post within the month and theme!

One other note, I got an email from blogger saying they might flag our blog as mature content, and then everybody would have to click that message before entry. I don't really want it marked as mature content, so please keep your posts as descent as possible, you don't have to, but it would be nice of you!
Also Mark has found a way of fixing our voting process, so it should be up and running this month!
Also if you want to send me any artists you think are inspirational. Send me their full name and link and I will start a lists called "Inspirational artists"
Thanks again everybody for all you help and great posts on this blog, I hope to see another Awesome MONTH!!!

Pegasus

Not pushing any new ground here, sorry guys. I'm a noob at animals.

Sun Wukong the Monkey King

Okay so here's the skinny. I somehow brought my tablet home today from work
without the pen....
After drawing this on an enourmous sketchbook and piecing it together on my comp I realized I was penless. So this will have to do.

Sun Wukong the Monkey King.
Monkey was born from a stone egg high up on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. He had special powers from the Jade Emperor and became quite a devious little rascal. He tricked a monarch into giving him a magic wand/staff, got drunk here and there, ate the best peaches of immortality and drunkenly defied the founder of the Daoist religion and swallowed the golden pills of the Elixir of Life.
I think he seems quite fun really & there is nothing wrong with Monkeys!

Sentinel of Bifröst; Herald of Ragnarök

In Norse mythology, Heimdall is the guardian of the rainbow bridge Bifröst and is destined to sound Gjallarhorn, warning the Æsir of Ragnarök. He will be the last of gods, after he and Loki die by each other's hands, before the world is reborn.

Oberon - King of Shadows and Fairies

Just a little concept sketch. Not too sure where the character originates in mythology. It may be Germanic, but to tell you the truth I just liked the name. As soon as I started looking into the character I imagined him like an old tree with lots of gnarled scars with eyes like pools of water. I also found a story about a fight between Oberon and Titana, his queen. So this is the heartbroken king becoming more feral and overgrown in his depression.

AHAHHA I sooo did not do this last minute shut up! I didn't research ..anything I just did a google image search for reference so I don't even know what goddess this is. Woot. I am ignorant. And lazy. Hope this doesn't offend anyone.. again!

How cheesy of you

Loki looking at his meal

In Norse mythology, Loki is a god or jötunn (or both). Loki's relation with the gods varies by source. Loki assists the gods, and sometimes causes problems for them. Loki is a shape shifter and in separate incidents he appears in the form of a salmon and a mare.

I've based this drawing on this one. And after I finished it I've actually read the article and noticed that it's not stated that he actually ate someone's heart D: Bear with me.

Polynesian Myth

(I am not sure how accurate this is because i found it on Wikipedia!)

A girl named Sarah-moe-aitu (“Sarah-sleeping-with-a-god”) liked to bathe in a certain pool that housed many eels. One day as Sarah was bathing, an eel transformed into a young man. His name was Tuna (Te Tuna?) and Sarah took him as her lover.

After they had been together for a while, one day Tuna told Sarah that there would be a great downpour the next day and he would be washed up onto the threshold of her house in his eel-form. When that happened, Tuna said, Sarah must cut off his head and bury it, and then regularly visit the place where the head had been buried. (i wonder why...)

Sarah obeyed Tuna, returning faithfully to watch the place where she had buried his head. After many days, she saw a shoot sprout from the spot. Another shoot appeared, and the two shoots grew into a pair of coconut trees—the first coconut trees known to man.

The Mangaians call the coconut’s white flesh “Tuna’s brains”, and they claim that you can see a face when you look at the shell of a coconut.
Yay I finally got something done for this! Tuna looks like such a creep dweeb... I did this pretty quick because i'm short on time but really wanted to do something for this one. I had a really rough drawing for the warrior round (of Charon from Fallout 3 teehee) but never got to finish it. :/
Nice to meet all you talented people!
crits = ♥

Golum

Hey this is my first post, watercolour and pen, I drew too small so its pretty messy.
If you were wondering it is a golum (or homunculous) that a boy stumbled across. Not exactly everyday mythology but it is around, basically they were the original robot, a manlike creature made from mud and plants. origins in jewish folklore and alchemy in general.

Hello everyone, really awesome stuff so far!
this is my post for this month.
This is kind of a baizzar story..I geuss its a jewish myth.basically this rebbay from prague made this creature from inanimate matter (earth and clay I think) to protect the jewish communety. theres many versions to the story, didnt really get in to it to much. its mosntly an excuse for me to draw a weird ass ugly monster.
if youre really into myth stories here is the wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golem.
anyway let me know what you think, I will appreciate some constructive criticism.
(I was gonna ink the lines too...but I forgot...and now its to late cause i'm already posting it...please forgive me friends.)
cheers!

Ride of the Valkyrie

Valkyries are awesome. They chose which warriors would die in battle (the only way to go) and then escort them to Valhalla. Once in Valhalla (paradise), the slain would often sit around telling tales of awesomeness, drink endless mugs of mead and fight each other until Ragnarok (armageddon). Hope yous like it. Crits are welcome and appreciated.

Druidia

Whats up HOmies and hOmettes?
So yeah, this is my first posting on here. Thanks again Trent :)
Now that its done though, I'm not happy with how it came out. Oh well, there's always next month.
Until then, here is my druid (Irish/celt mythology? or am I just talking out my ass) with some pixies. I really had no idea in mind, I just started drawing, and tried to steer clear of greek mythology. But yeah. Enjoy!

Tyr & Fenrir

Hello everybody! this is the little sister of May, Maria, I still don't have the invitation to post with my own account, so... for the moments, I will post this with her account and permission.
So, my choice for the blog is the myth of Tyr and Fenrir, stereotypicaly, the vikings have beard, but them the guy wasn't looking good so, beard off! By kind, he lost a hand D8.

Penelope

So, Penelope got married to Ulysses and not long after, he was called off to battle in the Trojan war. He was gone a long time, some thought he was dead, or at least seemed unlikely that he would return. Penelope started getting hassled by many suitors who wanted her hand in marriage. She still hoped Ulysses would return so she started thinking up ways of putting the horny guys off. She would say she was really busy making a funeral canopy for her father-in-law. And then at night, she would undo the work of the previous day.
I've updated it here, made her an American military wife who's repairing flags to keep the guys at bay. I also based her a bit on Penelope Cruz.

If anyone can think of a better way to do this, please tell.

Achilles! What if Achilles didn't look like Brad Pitt...and had hair in all the wrong places? Lets hear some crits! If anyone has a spare second, I just uploaded some more inked sketches on my blog, and I would love painting critiques! I'm trying to pick up on photoshop- so far listening to other crits on this blog are helping alot! Promising looking month! Great work everybody! Post, post, post!

Apsopsi. (or) Wendling chicki

I once was able to find the right name for the creature that is half-girl, half-lion, with wings, but now I'm not so sure. The Apsopsi is half-girl-half-lion, and the name is from Thailand. Wendling loves drawing these beauties, and I hope to one day not suck so much at them. This time I tried doing most of it in Flash using vectored shapes. Fun but time consuming! Oh, and someone asked me about process, so I tried to include it...is that okay Trent?

Minotaur

So I realize this is a sketch blog, but I hope renders are ok too. I've been messing about with some 3D stuff lately, so decided to do this for my entry this month. Decided not to finish his entire body. Click for full-size version.

Hel

This is Hel

Hel ("the Hidden" from the word hel,"to conceal") is the Norse goddess of the dead, ruler of the nine worlds of the Land of Mist, Niflheim or Niflhel, located in the far north-- a cold, damp place that is home to frost giants and dwarves. The name Hel was applied both to the Queen of the Underworld and the land itself, and it is thought that the land gave the Queen Her name. In the late Christianized form of the myth, when Hel became Hell, she was said to be the daughter of Loki, who was equated with Lucifer.

Aphrodite

Updated version

Ok so I saw the theme this morning and was quite into it, so I decided to draw Aphrodite just cause I wanted to try doing this style of drawing, basically no lineart just the solid colors and shading. Twas fun for my first try.

Would love feedback, cant wait to see peoples drawing!

New Theme

Hey Everyone
After some voting and bribery, Mythology is the winner for July! Great first month, there were 21 posts, and some great artwork, ALOT of fun! A few quick things; Most of the suggestions I got seemed to be very broad, try to be creative and narrow things down a little more. Like Justin commented, Mythology is extremely broad....try to narrow it to something like "Greek Mythology". Not all suggestions will be on the poll next month, because there were too many to choose from. I'm gonna try to keep it down to 10. Also, try to keep submissions with-in the month, and theme, so that I can keep an archive of work. I started an archive link on the side. As always, all suggestions are welcome! Let me know what you think. Good luck, and have fun!

Inspired!

Hey guys, I thought I'd post what I painted today, because I was blog surfing and came across this CRAZY concept painter. He's working on Guild Wars in Seattle and his stuff inspired me to paint, which I rarely do these days. His stuff is great inspiration for this blog too, with his crazy character paintings, it's just the kind of ideas and compositions to check out...if you're into it of course. His name is Kekai, and his blog is http://kekai.blogspot.com/ My piece here is a "draconian" speedpainting.

Warrior

Whew! Just under the wire!
It's been a lot of fun coming up with the ideas for the topic; I love seeing how differently everyone interprets it.

Defenders of the Feudal Lord

Wow, there've been a lot of fantastic submissions this month. It's nice to see things off to a good start!

Here's some samurais. I'll probably get around to putting a clean version up on my blog soon.

Warrior

xD

I'm Late!

I joined late and wouldn't you know it...left my sketchbook in a buddy's car as I was finishing up my sketch, so I hope this isn't too late, but I've got a viking for yas. This sketch is done with watercolor and some greyscale marker and color pencils. I love sketching like this, but I find it rather hard.

Cerebus

I dashed this off quick last night to get in under the wire for the warriors theme. When I thought of warriors of course the first thing I thought about drawing was Cerebus. It's pretty muddy, but whateva.
Everything so far on this blog looks AMAZING! I'll have to track you all down for art tips later.

New High Score!

yarrggghh!

I've been meaning to draw a warrior but kept putting it off. So, as kinda a warm down I fired off a quick sketch tonight to see what why would come up with. I like a few of the line ideas and wouldn't mind cleaning it up a bit after I'm done this months 11 sec, which, if I burn through sunday and monday night I should have done!

Warrior?**Read below

Hey Gang! Alright so I started sketching Cowboys and Indians...but I wasn't too happy with them. So I was thinking, what would a modern day, young, teen warrior look like? Then it hit me, a highschool bully! So I sketched one guy, then got into trying to give him personality, the easiest way for me to do that, was to create a short story line...so here is two bullies, tracking down nerds.

READ-Ok- So the blog is looking unbelievable! Great posts, beautiful drawings, and very inspirational art work. I'm not sure about you guys, but I had a blast doing this, and I'm looking forward to the next theme! Originally I was thinking of having a vote and a winner. But after Shane, Jason and Collin brought to my attention that it might ruin the fun, they helped think up a new approach. Starting next month, there will be a box on the right column that says "Vote for Julys theme", it will be up there for the first 15 days of every month, and just submit your idea. For the last 15 days of every month, there will be a voting poll in the right column, it will have all the themes suggested, and you can vote for your favourite by clicking...pretty simple. By the end of the month, we should have the next months theme.
This month is a little different, I already put the box up...submit your ideas. On the 1st I will take the ideas and set-up a poll, I will leave the poll up until the 5th. It will just cut into the month abit because of last mintue change. I hope that makes sense!!
Again, great 1st month thus far, hope everybody had a blast. You guys and gals made it easy for me to get this thing going, your talented drawings brought in other talented artists. So far we're up to around 4,000 visits in the first month, and the world map looks promising....we even have a dot in Australia. This blog originally started because Nash was moving back home, and we wanted a way to stay in touch, I thought I'd try and make it bigger, and I'm glad I did, because I love looking at all these great posts! As always I'm open to suggestion, thanks again for making this happen! Thanks to Shane for making a cool 1st header, and everyone who's made suggestions to get this moving. I'm out of town for the next week, if you have problems logging in or w/e, email Shane at
shane.plante.2@gmail.com .
Thanks!

Pocahontas wishes she was this cool

This actually started out as a viking chick but I was too lazy to reference it so it turned into this... which I also didn't reference. Hope no one is offended. Here is my warrior entry.

PS. This is "Snared" fanart. lol

Hey all.

This is going to be a great blog...it is already. I'm going to use these topics to try and push my character design, so you might not see much in the way of layout from me.

Hello, Sketchy People! ....The Goose.

Hey guys, isn't this fun?

Wowsers, Penny! There have been some really neat warrior theme drawings so far. So I thought I'd mess it all up, well sorta, with this. The Goose, he's the motorcycle cop from Mad Max and in my opinion should have been the real Road Warrior. You guys don't have to accept it, I was just havin' fun time in ma brain again... Double maximum real wild!

Little Warrior

Hey everybody, really cool stuff so far. Having a nice broad first theme looks like its workin pretty well.

So heres my entry, like it was said below; warriors gotta start somewhere!

enjoy!

Warriors of Kin

Hey Here is my post for this month. We have two warriors just enjoying each others company. One is a brute who has some kind of a glowing energy power, and the other is a hippie girl who can hover slightly off of the ground. This was a lot of fun to do, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next theme. Cheers.

My Entry

Looks like people are starting to put their entries up, so I thought I'd do mine too. Great work so far, I see May's gonna be a tough competitor.

Mine's a tribal warrior of some sort. Pretty rough and sketchy, about 2-3 hours of work.

Warriors start off somewhere

FULL VIEW PLZ! KTHXBYE

First post here? Anyway...

... It wasn't supposed to be this, but my sister lent me a Mythology book three days ago and I had my eyes fixed in the Celtic myths. I thought it was a good idea to depict Cú chulainn. But then I read he killed a dog when he was just 7 years old and I used that as excuse to paint a Boticelli/Bouguereau face, heh. I thought that was cool. Hum, and they believed crows were a symbol of bad luck or something (death). No, he didn't die when he was 7 but I thought I might throw that for composition porpuses.

I'm planning on keep on posting ^^
